What K9 Officers Does
K9 Officers purchases and trains K9 officers to support local law enforcement agencies.
Our Process
-
1
Application Process
K9 Officers assesses and evaluates each application to determine which applicants, departments, and communities would most benefit from a K9 officer. Considerations include
-
health, physical fitness, and emotional stability of the human officer
-
size of the department
-
financial resources of the department
-
type of training needed to meet the needs of the community
-
2
Dog Selection and Training
Because of the relationships K9 Officers has built with kennels in Europe, breeders understand the criteria we use to select the highest quality dogs for each purpose and aid in the selection process.
Expenses to obtain and train prospective K9s:
-
air travel
-
accommodations
-
dog purchases
-
veterinarian care
-
food and boarding
-
3
“First Date”
Prospective handlers meet their prospective K9s to see if sparks fly. If handlers match successfully with K9s, the training process begins.
Handlers and K9s train together for 9 weeks before they are evaluated by the American Police Canine Association to meet certification standards for applicable tests:
-
obedience
-
aggression control
-
area search/building search
-
narcotic detector
-
explosives detection/explosive odor identification
-
cadaver detection
-
search and rescue trailing/search and rescue area

Monitor K9s
K9 Officers cares for our K9s. We place K9s in Texas and neighboring states to monitor their continued training, efficacy, and health throughout their service to their respective departments and beyond.
Continued Support for K9s
Bulletproof Vests for K9s
We also ensure the safety of our K9s by providing Kevlar bulletproof vests to wear while on duty. Kevlar vests cost $1500-2000.
Less expensive bulletproof vests are available, but they are heavier and hotter than Kevlar. And when 10 pounds could be the difference between life and death for our dogs, the financial savings aren’t worth the cost.
Heat Alarms for K9 Units
In addition to bulletproof vests, K9 Officers also supplies heat alarms for handlers’ K9 units.
In many cases, K9 officers are only deployed when necessary, so they may sit in a locked vehicle for minutes or even hours.
Heat alarms cost $1500-2000 but are necessary to protect K9 officers in extreme climates like the American South.
K9 Retirement
When a K9 officer retires after 7-9 years of service, the last handler that worked with the K9 becomes the primary caretaker. At that time, K9 Officers recommits to providing veterinary care.
Support K9 Officers as we pay for protective equipment and the continued veterinary care of K9s who have devoted their lives to protect and serve their communities. Submit a one-time donation or commit to a monthly donation now.
